What is a dry cleaning chemical sponge? Most people think these are chemically treated, but they are all natural vulcanized latex rubber designed primarily to clean walls to remove soot from fire damage and furnace puff back.

Chemical Dry Cleaning Soot Removal Sponges are for removal of dry dirt, dust, hair and dry smoke/soot residues mostly from ceilings and walls. Avoid wet cleaning of soot-covered surfaces which often leads to smearing, smudging or staining.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners and even professionals can make is to treat fire clean-up like any other kind of clean-up. Your first impulse may be to use foaming or liquid upholstery cleaner or wood cleaner on your furniture or detergent cleaner on walls and ceilings. However, if you do this, you will be creating a bigger mess than you started with. Instead, remember you must first remove as much soot as possible before applying any liquids. Don’t ever dampen sooty furniture or walls before first cleaning it with a dry cleaning sponge. These 6" x 3" x 1 1/2" thick, porous dry cleaning chemical sponges can be used wet and dry. Working like large “erasers”, these rubber sponges draw the dust, soot and smoke residue into the cells of the sponge material. Under normal conditions, a single Soot Sponge should clean a 12' x 20' wall surface.

The soot sponges are used absolutely dry. Chemical Dry Cleaning Sponges are ideal to pick up dust and dirt from areas that cannot be cleaned by water or solvents. Directions for Using Dry Cleaning Soot Sponges:

1. Remove any undamaged furniture, etc. from the area to be cleaned.
2. Vacuum First.
3. Use completely dry to avoid smearing, smudging or staining. Do Not wet sponge.
4. Begin on the ceiling, since debris will drop down.
5. Then move to the walls, again beginning at the top and working to the bottom using straight, parallel strokes that overlap slightly.
6. Do not scrub.
7. When the surface of the sponge becomes clogged with soot, simply remove surface layer by shaving with a razor blade to expose a new sponge surface.
8. As you use the sponge, it absorbs smoke/soot and dirt into the pores of the sponge. The uniqueness of the sponge is all in the cell structure.
9. The sponges can be cleaned with water and a mild, neutral pH detergent once overly soiled and clogged with soot.
10. After use of the soot removing sponges, the surfaces may still need to be wet cleaned using Wall-Clene™ (See “Related Products” below) for removal of all soil.
11. You can add Smoke Off (See “Related Products” below)to the cleaning solution to reduce the smoke odor.
12. Remember that, unlike dry cleaning, when wet cleaning a vertical surface like a wall, you clean from the bottom up to avoid streaking.
