Water Pump Repair & Schematic for Bane-Clene® Carpet Cleaning Extraction Equipment

How to repair the Water Pump (Cat. #20479) for detergent solutions used in Bane-Clene carpet cleaning equipment. If you have no water pressure, the rubber stator inside the solution pump has likely worn, blown or been damaged by running the machine dry.

How to Replace Stator #20510 in Water Pump #20480

  • Note: ALWAYS replace the Stator Support Ring (#20520) when replacing the stator.
  • It is not necessary to remove the hose fittings from the pump.
  • Remove the 8 screws (#20530) on the back of the suction housing (#20500) on the intake side of the pump, using a long, slender screwdriver.
  • Slide the suction housing back from the main pump body (#20490) and remove the stator (#20510) from the rotor (#20590) shaft using a counter-clockwise motion.
  • Insert the support ring (#20520) into the new stator.
  • Thread the stator onto the rotor shaft, using a clockwise motion, until it seats into the receiving recess of the main pump body.
  • The stator edge forms its own gasket; no other gasket is required.
  • Slide the suction housing over the stator and replace the 8 screws.
  • Tighten the screws in an alternating pattern, as you would the lugs on a car wheel, bringing the housing into contact with the main pump body as evenly as possible.
  • Excess pressure on one side will cause the housing to bind and crack the casting.

How to Replace the Pump Seal or Bearings

  • Remove the pump from the machine.
  • Remove the screws holding the suction housing (#20500) to the pump body (#20490).
  • Remove the suction housing and stator (#20510 / 20480).
  • Remove the rotor (#20590) from the flexible joint (#20580) by turning counter-clockwise (R.H. thread).
  • Remove the flexible joint from the shaft (#20550) using a 3/16-inch Allen wrench in the end of the joint, turning counter-clockwise.
  • Carefully slide the mechanical seal (#20570) off the shaft.
  • Carefully pry the seal seat out of the pump body.
  • Replace the complete seal assembly. Seal components are matched parts and are not interchangeable.
  • The bearing (#20540) and shaft assembly can be removed from the pump body after the snap ring (#20560) is removed.
  • To remove the assembly, lightly tap the shaft at the threaded end using a block of wood to protect the threads.
  • The bearings may be pressed off the shaft.
  • Note: When replacing bearings, always press on the inner race when assembling to the shaft, and on the outer race when pressing bearings into the housings.

How to Assemble the Water Pump

  • Press the bearings onto the shaft.
  • Press the shaft assembly into the pump body, securing it with the snap ring.
  • Install the mechanical seal:
    • Clean and lubricate the lapped sealing faces using dishwashing soap.
    • Lubricate the outer surface of the seal seat and push the assembly into the base in the pump body, seating it firmly and squarely.
    • After cleaning and lubricating the shaft, slide the seal body along the shaft until it meets the seal seat.
    • Install the spring and spring retainer on the shaft.
  • Thread the flexible joint into the shaft in a clockwise direction (R.H. thread).
  • Thread the rotor onto the flexible joint in a clockwise direction (R.H. thread).
  • Slide the stator onto the rotor.
  • Insert the rounded end of the stator ring (#20520) into the end of the stator before installing the stator on the rotor.
  • Secure the stator and suction housing, with the suction port vertical, up to the pump body using the screws.

How to Repair Broken Flex Joint #20580

  • Separate the two halves of the solution pump housing.
  • Leave the base of the pump in the base unit and the drive belt attached.
  • A 15 mm six-point socket will slip snugly over the broken half of the flex joint attached to the pump shaft.
  • Using an impact wrench, spin the broken part out of the threads in the pump shaft (turning counter-clockwise).
  • Remove the stator and auger from the other half of the housing.
  • Clamp the auger in a padded vise and use the 15 mm socket and impact wrench to remove the other broken half of the flex joint from the auger (turning counter-clockwise).
  • In the field, the repair can be done using a socket extension or two and striking the ratchet handle sharply with a hammer to remove the broken part from the pump shaft.
  • The other half can be removed from the auger the same way, but leave the auger in the stator while striking the ratchet handle sharply with a hammer.
